Charles Cross started his aquatic career a short-distance freestyle swimmer, competing in distances up to 100 yards. He later turned to diving, but was unfortunate to be around at the same time that Harold Smyrk was dominating British diving. Cross finished second to Smyrk on many occasions in 1907-08, including at the inaugural English National Diving Championship at Southwark Baths in 1907. Cross finished fourth at the same event in 1908, when Smyrk was again the champion. Cross was a member of the famous Neptune Divers exhibition team.
