Biography

Runner-up in the 1957 Manchester Junior 100 yards Breaststroke Championship at the age of 15, Bolton´s Gerard Rowlinson later became the senior Manchester and Northern Counties breaststroke champion, and in 1959 and 1960 was crowned the ASA 200 yards champion. Having made his Great Britain début against East Germany in 1959, Rowlinson was selected for the 200 metres breaststroke at the 1960 Roma Olympics. Despite finishing third in his heat, however, won by the eventual gold medallist Bill Mulliken of the USA, Rowlinson was eliminated because he was outside the 16 fastest swimmers to qualify for the semi-finals.
