Jack Taylor had a great deal of success in his 15-year swimming career. A chief assistant at the Rotherham Borough Treasurer’s department, he was the Rotherham Swimming Club champion 14 consecutive years from 1899-1912, losing his title just three weeks before his sudden death at the age of 29. He also held the Yorkshire backstroke title five times, in 1907 and 1909-12. Nationally, he never won an ASA title, but was runner up in the 150 yards backstroke three years in succession, to Frederick Unwin in 1906-08, and was third when Unwin won again in 1909, and in 1911 Taylor was again third, behind Belgium’s Maurice Weckesser and Hungary’s András Baronyi. Taylor was scheduled to take part in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics but he could not get away because of commitments at home. He was a former secretary of the Rotherham Swimming Club
