Sidney Willis contested the inaugural ASA 150 yards backstroke championship in 1903. He finished fourth on that occasion, and that would be his best finish in the event in the seven years he contested it up to 1909. After finishing second in his heat at the White City Olympic trial in 1908, Willis went to the Games as one of seven British swimmers in the backstroke event, but he finished second in his opening heat and failed to progress to the semi-final.
