Christine Herbst was an East German backstroke specialist who started her career with a sixth place over 200 m at the 1970 Barcelona Europeans. She was then the 1972 East German champion. That same year she took the silver medal with the medley relay at the München Olympics. Individually she placed seventh and fifth in the 100 m and 200 backstrokes, respectively. At the 1973 Belgrade Worlds she came in sixth and fourth in the 100 and 200 m backstrokes, and then retired. By profession, Herbst was a cosmetician who owned her own practice after re-unification.
