Breaststroke swimmer Bettina Löbel represented East Germany at the 1980 Moskva Summer Games, which were boycotted by the Western countries. She finished seventh in the 200 metres final and was eliminated in the heats of the 100 metres. She won the East German nationals in the 200 breaststroke in 1979 and 1980. Löbel later married, and moved to Moers, where she worked as a swimming coach in Duisburg.
