Biography
Kathleen Nord was an East German swimmer who won the 200 metres butterfly gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. She also finished fifth over 400 metres IM. At World Championships, she enjoyed four podium finishes, winning gold in both 1982 with the 4x100 freestyle relay, and 1986 in the 400 IM. From 1983-89 Nord also won five gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals at the European Championships.
After German re-unification it became known that Nord was given doping substances as a part of the state prescribed doping program. She lived for a few years with the Russian swimmer Nikolay Yevseyev in West Germany. She then emigrated, without him, to the USA and turned to coaching at Palm Beach, Florida. In 2013 she returned to Magdeburg with her four daughters.
