Long-distance freestyle swimmer Carmela Schmidt won two bronze medals at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, in the 200 and 400 metres freestyle representing East Germany. She also swam in the heats with the 4x100 freestyle relay squad, but was not in the four that won the gold medal. At the 1981 European Championships, she won gold medals in the 200 and 800 metres freestyle, and silver in the 400. At the 1982 Worlds she won gold in the 400 and bronze in the 800.
Schmidt was briefly married to rower Carl Ertel and later became a swimming coach with the Regional Olympic Center at Sachsen-Anhalt, Magdeburg. After German re-unification it became known that her performances should be viewed in a different light due to the systematic administration of illegal performance-enhancing substances by GDR sports officials, doctors and trainers.
