Sabine Steinbach was a well-known IM swimmer from the former GDR in the 1960s. She won a bronze medal in the 400 IM at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, and also came in an unfortunate fourth in the 200 IM. She burst onto the scene in 1966 as a butterfly specialist at the European Youth Championships. One year later she won the European Youth titles in both IM events. Domestically she won her only East German national title in 1968 in the 400 IM, finishing second that year in the 200 IM. She retired two years after Mexico and became a chef.
