East German freestyle swimmer Thomas Flemming was second in the 200 metres B-final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and was classified tenth. He also won a silver medal with the 4x200 free relay, and a bronze with the 4x100 free. In 1986, Flemming won the gold medal at the World Championships with the 4x200 free relay. In 1987 and 1989, he won medals of each color at the European Championships, all in freestyle medley events. In 1987 Flemming also won his only national title over 200 metres free. He later turned to coaching at his home club SC Chemnitz.
