Jörg Stingl

Jörg Stingl was an East German backstroke swimmer who was eliminated in the 100 and 200 metre heats at the 1980 Moskva Summer Games. He later became an extreme mountaineer, and on 22 May 2001 became only the second German, after Hans Engl in 1978, to climb Mount Everest without additional oxygen. Stingl was also the first and, so far (as of 2020), only German to climb the Seven Summits without additional oxygen.

In 2019, Stingl and former world class swimmer Sven Theloke crossed all 20 Frisian Islands in the Wadden Sea in an event organised as a triathlon. Stingl had studied machine construction, but later became a freelance extreme sportsman and wrote several books about his experiences.
