West German freestyle and butterfly swimmer Ina Beyermann burst into the scene at the 1980 Youth European Championships, winning three titles in the 200, 400 and 800 metres. The following year she placed fifth and fourth, respectively, over 200 and 400 metres at the senior Europeans. She won medals at the 1983 Europeans, with silver in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay and two bronzes with the 4x100 metres freestyle and the 4x100 metres medley relays.
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics Beyermann reached the finals of the 200 metres freestyle, and 100 and 200 metres butterfly. She won the 200 metres butterfly bronze medal, and finished seventh in the 200 freestyle, and eighth in the 100 metres butterfly. With the 4x100 metres medley relay she added a silver medal, only beaten by the US girls. She then had severe shoulder problems but managed to qualify for the 1988 Seoul Games. Nevertheless, she did not qualify for the finals over 100 and 200 metres butterfly. In total, Beyermann won more than 30 national titles and set 24 West German records. She later worked as a swimming and youth coach in Hamburg.
