Backstroke and individual medley specialist Karin Bormann did not reach the finals in either the 200 m backstroke and 200 m individual medley at the 1972 München Summer Games. Four years later at Montréal, she participated in both backstroke events, but was again eliminated in the heats. She won several West German titles. Bormann later graduated as a sports teacher, and worked as a personal coach. She married her teammate Walter Kusch and legally changed her name to Karina Kusch. The family moved to Hildesheim.
