Breaststroke swimmer Uta Frommater unfortunately finished fourth in the 100 breast at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, just 0.1 seconds behind US-swimmer Sharon Wichman. She then won the bronze medal with the West German 4x100 medley relay. She earned seven West German national titles, in 1965 and 1967-69 in the 100 breaststroke, and in 1967-79 at 200 metres. At the 1970 Europeans she won one silver and one bronze medal. In 1968 she was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
Her daughter Inka was born in 1979, but was found to have cystic fibrosis. Nevertheless, her daughter survived as she underwent liver and both lungs transplants in 2002.
