West German synchronized swimmer Gerlind Scheller was eliminated in the qualification round in the solo event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She also came ninth with Gudrun Hänisch in the duet event as the best non-qualifiers for the final. At the European Championships the previous year she won a silver medal with Hänisch in the duet, and a bronze medal with the team. With Hänisch she also won the national title from 1982-84.
At Seoul in 1988, Scheller partnered Heike Friedrich, but did not qualify for the final. In the solo event she finished eighth and last in the final. From 1979-88 she won ten national titles in the solo event. In 1988, she also won the national title in the group event. Sigrid Hänisch, mother of her partner Gudrun, coached Hänisch and Scheller.
