Biography

Friedel Berges won the 1926 European Championships with the 4×200 freestyle relay, winning again at the 1927 Europeans, setting a world record with 9:49.6. He came in second at the 1926 European Championships in the 1,500 freestyle, and placed third in the 400. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics Berges was eliminated in the preliminaries of the 400 free and in the 4x200 the team was disqualified due to an illegal exchange. Nationally Berges won 400 freestyle titles in 1924, 1926 and 1928, adding 1,500 titles in 1924 and 1926. He played occasionally for the German national water polo team.
