West German swimmer Horst Bleeker from Bremen won the National 200 and 400 metres freestyle titles in 1957 and in 1959 captured the 100 freestyle title. He participated in the Melbourne Olympics but was eliminated in the heats in the 100 freestyle. He also finished fifth as part of the 4x200 freestyle relay team.
