It was the same at the 1976 Montréal Olympics, when he swam in the heats with the 4x100 medley team but missed out on a place in the final squad, which won the bronze medal. In the individual 100 metres freestyle event he was eliminated in the heats.
Braunleder studied sports science with a focus on sports medicine and journalism. He then started voluntary and freelance work at Radio Bremen, where he became a sports and current affairs reporter. In 1991 he started working for the German broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in the fields of sports and actual themes.
