Rainer Jacob was the son of swimmer Gisela Jacob-Arendt and the nephew of another swimmer Heinz Arendt. Rainer also became an Olympic swimmer at the 1972 München Games when he finished sixth with the West German 4x100 freestyle relay squad. Two years earlier, he won the silver medal with this relay squad at the 1970 Barcelona European Championships. Jacob never won an individual West German title.
