West German freestyle swimmer Dirk Korthals participated in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, winning the silver medal in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay. He also placed fourth in both the 4x100 metres freestyle and the 4x100 metres medley relays. In the 100 metres freestyle event, he finished eighth and last in the final.
At the 1982 and the 1986 World Championships Korthals won a bronze and a silver medal with the 4x200 metres relays. At the 1985 Europeans he won the gold medal with the 4x100 metres relay.
By profession, Korthals became CEO at ME Engineering, a company who was a manufacturer-neutral service provider in selected industrial areas of the chemical, petrochemical, energy, steel, raw materials and manufacturing industries.
