West German swimmer Gerald Mörken was a breaststroke specialist. He finished fourth with the 4x100 metres medley relay squad and seventh in the 100 metres breaststroke at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. In the 200 metres he was eliminated in the heats. He also won two bronze medals at World Championships, winning the 100 metres breaststroke in 1978 and medley relay in 1982. Due to the US-led boycott of the Western countries he could not participate at Moscow in 1980.
Mörken’s greatest moment was in 1977 when he won three gold medals at the European Championships, over 100 (setting a new World Record) and 200 metres breaststroke, and with the medley relay. He also won two more bronze medals over 100 metres breaststroke in 1981 and 1983, and a silver medal in 1983 with the medley relay.
Nationally, Mörken won the 100 metres title in 1979, and the 200 metres title in 1977. His career was a bit overshadowed by his team-mate Walter Kusch. Mörken later owned a commercial agency for cleaning products.
