Biography
Peter Nocke was a world-class freestyle swimmer in the mid-1970s. At the 1976 Montréal Olympics he won two bronze medals, with the West German 4x100 medley relay and in the individual 100 metres freestyle. He also reached the final of the 200 metres freestyle (sixth), and 4x200 freestyle relay, when they finished an unfortunate fourth, only 16/100 seconds behind Great Britain.
Nocke won four relay medals (one gold, two silver and one bronze) at the 1973 and 1975 World Championships. More successfully, he won nine gold medals and one silver at the European Championships in 1974 and 1977. Domestically, he also won nine individual national titles.
Nocke was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Sculptor Arno Breker later created a bronze bust of Nocke, alongside other busts of Ulrike Meyfarth, Walter Kusch and Jürgen Hingsen. Nocke became an industrial clerk by profession, and owned a security company. He regularly participated in masters swimming events.
