Biography

Nils Rudolph was a German freestyle swimmer who finished eighth over 50 metres, and 12th over 100 metres at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. With the 4 x 100 metres freestyle relay squad he won a silver medal at the 1991 World Championships, although he only swam in the heats. Rudolph was suspended for four years by former GDR officials after a 1983 swim meeting as he had “unpermitted West contacts”.

After re-unification, Rudolph had his best results at European Championships winning the gold medal over 50 metres in 1991, and added two more silvers and a bronze. In 1989 he had won his first medal, a bronze over 50 metres. At the Short Course Europeans that same year he also captured one gold and two silvers.

Rudolph won national championships in the 50 metres freestyle (1990-92), and 50 metres butterfly (1990-91), and was also successful in the 100 metres butterfly (1991), and 100 metres freestyle (1992).
