With the 4x100 medley relay he finished an unfortunate fourth on three successive occasions 1988-1996. In the 100 metres breaststroke, Warnecke won the bronze medal at Atlanta in 1996, and finished 11th, 13th and 20th in 1988, 1992, and 2000 respectively. Over 200 metres he was placed a disappointing 31st in 1988.

In 2005 he had his greatest moment over the non-Olympic 50 metres breaststroke event, winning the gold medal and becoming the oldest ever swimming world champion. At European Championships, Warnecke won 13 gold, four silver and three bronze medals, capturing four individual gold medals in 1994, 1998-2000 in his specialist discipline, 50 metres breaststroke.
Warnecke won numerous national titles mostly in the 50 and 100 metres breaststroke. He also set several European and world swimming records during his career. In 2005, he was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. He later became a physician and developed a special diet program as an entrepreneur for his products. As a nutritional consultant, he also worked for Bundesliga football clubs such as Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Warnecke was for many years, an active spokesman in the German Swimming Federation. Between 2001-05 he turned to automobile racing and competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup.
