Biography

Zoltán Bitskey was a swimmer with Egri MOVE from 1922. From 1924 onwards he was a member of the Hungarian national team. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, he competed in the 200 metre breaststroke, but did not reach the final. In 1926, at the first European Swimming Championships, he swam on the Hungarian 4×200 metre freestyle relay, winning a silver medal. At the 1927 Roma Students World Championship Bitskey was the most successful Hungarian swimmer, with four golds and one silver medal. In 1928 he left the national team and in 1931 finished his sports career.

Bitskey then started coaching swimmers at MOVE. After his law studies, he settled down in Debrecen, where he started a family. He had been working in administration and also continued his coaching activities, later working in Cluj, but after returning to Eger, he went into public education. Bitskey then continued as a trainer in Miskolc and then worked at the Legal Department of the Lenin Metallurgical Works. After his retirement, he was a sports manager for swimming in Miskolc. He is remembered by the Bitskey Zoltán Memorial Competition.
