In high school Elemér Gombos competed in swimming and athletics (javelin throw). He graduated from the Ludovika Military Academy in 1938 and competed in swimming in the color of the affiliation of the Academy. He primarily competed in backstroke, in the 100m event, where he took third place at the World College Games and won national championship in 1935. He improved the national record twice. He took part in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, where he did not advance from the preliminary round.
Gombos participated in the Second World War as a professional soldier. He was a Soviet prisoner of war in February 1945, from which he was released in September 1947 and joined the Hungarian People’s Army. He later moved back to his hometown, where he worked as paramedic until his retirement.
