Biography

József Munk started his sporting career as a footballer before turning to swimming in 1906. Two years later he competed at the London Olympics, where he was a member the Hungarian squad that won the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay silver medal. In 1911, he was the Hungarian 100 yard champion. In addition to actively participating in competitive sport, Munk worked in the family restaurant. During World War I, Munk was captured in Russia. After the war, he did not return to Hungary, and after changing his name to Mikulszki, worked as an electrical engineer in the Soviet Union. In World War II, he was a translator for the local German command.
