Biography

Sándor Németh began his sports career in 1938 at the Kaposvár TSE, then moved to Budapest in 1939, where he soon achieved excellent results in the 100 and 200 metres breaststroke for BBTE and then Gamma. After the war Németh competed for Csepel where he won 14 national championship gold medals and set five records. He also won four gold and three silver medals at the World University Championships. He reached the peak of his sports career in 1947 when he came second in the 200 metres breaststroke at the Monte Carlo European Championships. In 1948 he competed in the same event at the Olympics but failed to reach the finals. After the Olympics he was a member of the 3 x 100 metres European national mixed relay team.

During his sports career Németh worked in the financial department at the WM factory. He retired from competition at the age of 27 and worked as the chief accountant at the Népstadion and Institutions Company until his retirement. In 1982 at the 75th anniversary meeting of the Hungarian Swimming Association, he was awarded the title of “Eternal Champion” in recognition of his achievements in swimming.
