Imre Nyéki competed as a swimmer for the FTC from 1941, the UTE from 1945, the Budapesti Előre from 1947, and the Budapesti Honvéd from 1949 to 1958. Nyéki won a total of 35 Hungarian championships between 1947 and 1958 and was a member of the national team.
At the European Championships in Monte Carlo Nyéki won a bronze medal as a member of the Hungarian 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay team. At the 1948 London Olympics he finished second in the same event. In 1949 he won the college World championship title in Budapest in the 100 metres and 200 metres freestyle relay and won silver in the 400 metres freestyle. Two years later in Berlin he was the World college champion in the 200 and 400 metres backstroke, as well as in the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay, and second in both the 200 and 400 metres freestyle. He was fifth in the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. At the 1954 European Champions in Torino, he won gold in the 100 metres freestyle and the relay and finished sixth in the 400 metres freestyle. In Budapest he was the World college champion in the 100 and 400 metres freestyle, as well as in the 4 x 100 metres medley and the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay. He also won a bronze medal in the freestyle relay at the 1958 European Championships in Budapest.
From 1947 Nyéki worked as an official and then became a professional soldier in 1949. From 1957 he continued as a restaurant business manager. In 1960 he received a coaching qualification at the Training Institute of the College of Physical Education.
From the 1970s onwards Nyéki regularly competed in senior competitions where he won eight more world championship titles. He died of blood poisoning. In 1997 the sports facility in Budapest’s District XI was named after him.
