Márton Sipos

Márton Sipos was only 20 when he started swimming competitively while studying in Keszthely. A year later he won the national 100 metres breaststroke title. In 1922 he moved to Budapest and competed with MAFC Budapest and won the national 100 breaststroke title in both 1922 and 1923, and was a member of the 3x100 mixed relay team. In 1922 he broke the world 100 breaststroke record with 1:16.2. In 1924 he moved to Eger and also competed at the 1924 Paris Olympics. As the 100 breast was not then an Olympic discipline, however, he had to compete in the 200, but did not make it to the final. In 1925 he moved on again, and joined MTK, and finished second in that year’s national championship. It turned out to be his last championship, because in 1926 he was hospitalised in the Budakeszi Sanatorium with incurable tuberculosis of the bone and soon died. The Sipos Márton International Swimming Memorial Competition is held regularly in Szekszárd in his honour.
