László Szentgróthy was born as Lajos Schwarz, but because of his career as an athlete he took a new name. In the colors of MAFC, in 1911, he won second place at the national championship in the 100 yd freestyle. In 1912, Szentgróthy competed in the 100 m freestyle and backstroke at the Stockholm Olympics. In 1913, he won the Hungarian title in the 100 yd freestyle.
In addition to swimming, Szentgróthy also took part in the management of MAFC. In World War I, he fought on the Northern front. After the war, he first worked as a chemical engineer in Târgu-Mureş and Bucareşti (both in Romania). During this time, he was rumored to have participated at the 1920 Olympics for Romania, but he disputed that charge, and there is no evidence of it. Szentgróthy returned to Budapest In 1924.
Personal bests: 100 yd freestyle – 57.4 (1913), 100 m backstroke – 1:20.0 (1912).
