Sigurður Jónsson was a swimmer who competed in the 200 metre breaststroke at the 1948 London Olympics. He was the first Icelandic swimmer to reach the finals at the European Championships, which he did in 1947.
Jónsson initially worked on sea trawlers and then at age 19 started at the Customs Gate. He worked there until forced to retire at 90-years-old. Jónsson was known as a great musician and played harmonica, drums, harmonicas, and piano. He played in country and dance groups in Reykjavík, often performing three times a week.
