Biography

Anna Maria Cecchi was a successful butterfly swimmer from Trieste. She competed in over 30 international meetings, the first against Switzerland at Bellinzona in 1957, and the last at the 1966 Utrecht European Championships. She won Italian titles in every category, and at the international level took part in two European Championships and two Olympic Games. At Roma in 1960 she was a finalist in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay and, at Tokyo four years later, she reached the semi-final of the 100 metres butterfly.

Cecchi set Italian records in 100 butterfly, 400 freestyle, and in relays. In the world rankings, her best position was the 12th in the 100 metres butterfly. After her competitive career, Cecchi became coach in the cities of Mantova and Trieste, and some of her protégés were selected for the Italian national team.
