Ilaria Tocchini was one of the greatest athletes in the history of Italian women’s swimming and, at the same time, deeply involved in the sporting life of her city, Livorno, where she held political positions in the city council. In the early 21st century she became president of a young and vibrant swimming club in her city, Regina del Nuoto, which she previously helped to found. In her competitive career, she swapped clubs between Torino and Livorno, where she was coached by Corrado Rosso and Stefano Morini, respectively
In 1987 Tocchini won a silver medal at the European Championships in Strasbourg as part of the 4x100 m medley relay team. She was also a finalist at the Seoul Olympics with the medley relay (eighth) and in the following edition (Barcelona 1992) she finished eighth in the 200 butterfly. At her third Olympic appearance, in Atlanta 1996, she was still eighth with the medley relay.
Tocchini competed at the 1986 World Championships in Madrid, placing fourth in the medley relay and reaching the final of the 100 m butterfly. Tocchini also reached the final of the 200m butterfly in 2001 and as part of the Italian team placed sixth in the medley relay in 1994.
