Antonio Attanasio

Antonio Attanasio was an Italian swimmer whose specialty was the 100 butterfly. He was called up to the national team at the 1966 European Championships, but achieved his best international performance at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics by reaching the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly. In 1967 and 1968 he established several Italian records in the 100 fly.

After the 1968 Mexico City Olympics Attanasio retired from competition and joined ISEF, the Higher Institute of Physical Education. He married early, had two children, and continued to coach and teach in the pool and school. In December 1982, after returning from a meet in Benevento, where he taught, he was killed in a head-on car accident. In March 2011 the gardens in front of the Federico II University of Napoli were named after him and a swimming trophy was also named after him in Bagnoli.
