A backstroke specialist, Emanuele Merisi was a four-time Olympian (1992-2004), winning a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the 200 backstroke. At the European Championships Merisi won five medals, starting with his bronze medal in 1993 in the 200 back, but he never reached the top step of the podium. His greatest tournament was the 1997 Mediterranean Games when he won three gold medals – in the 100 and 200 backstroke and medley relay.
