Pierpaolo Spangaro

Italian swimmer Pierpaolo Spangaro competed twice at the Olympic Games, in 1960 and 1964. He also appeared at the European Championships in 1962 and 1966, at four Universiade meetings, the 1963 Mediterranean Games, where he won silver in the 4x200 free relay, and numerous international meetings from 1959 to 1968. In 1964 Spangaro set an Italian record of 4:25.80 in the 400 freestyle, a time that would be beaten only seven years later. He won one Italian individual title, in the 1963 400 free.

After retiring from competition, Spangaro moved to Riva del Garda for work. He had graduated in engineering and was the manager in charge of yarn quality control at Aquafil. Spangaro died suddenly during holidays in Lignano Sabbiadoro due to a heart attack.
