Saburo Ito graduated from Nakaizumi Agricultural High School and then went to Meiji University. While attending Meiji he placed fifth in the final of the 200 metre breaststroke at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. After graduation in 1938 Ito joined the Showa Steel Works. During the Pacific War he was involved in the battle of Hong Kong and was wounded by a gunshot. Ito later served as the director of the Meiji University Swimming Club and managing director of the Japan Swimming Federation. He died of bladder cancer.
