Shorai Kimura started swimming while attending school in Kyoto. After entering Waseda, he took up backstroke swimming seriously. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, he failed to advance from the heats in the 100 metre backstroke. At home, he won three titles in the 100 m and one in the 200 m backstroke. Later he was a well-known sports journalist and editor from the 1930s until the 1960s. As a reporter, he covered the summer Olympics in 1936, 1952, 1956, and 1960. In the 1950s, he helped to make soccer popular in Japan. He wrote several books about Olympic history and football (soccer). In 1963, he retired from his post as editor-in-chief of Sankei Sports in Osaka.
