Malaysian swimmer Tay Li Leng was the youngest athlete to represent her nation at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, doing so when she was 14-years-old. Tay swam in the 100 metres breaststroke where she finished in 36th place. Despite finishing in second place in her heat she was not one of the fastest swimmers to progress to either the final or B final. Two years later Tay competed for Malaysia at her home edition of the Commonwealth Games when it was held in Kuala Lumpur. She swam in the 100 and 200 metres breaststroke and the 4 × 100 m medley relay.
