Ibone Belausteguigoitía was born in Spain to a sporting family that included her uncle Belauste, who won a silver medal in the football tournament at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, and her older brother Iker, who would go on to compete in two editions of the Games as a sailor. The family moved to Mexico in the early 1930s and remained there following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, with Ibone taking her love of diving to her new home. She went on to represent Mexico in the springboard event at the 1948 London Olympics, where she placed 16th. Two years later, she won gold in that event at the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games. Having studied as a teacher and business administrator, she later worked as a missionary, but continued to compete in masters’-level tournaments into her 80s. Her grandniece Bibiane Schulze Solano won a bronze medal for Germany in the football tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
