Cor van Gelder was a great breaststroke swimmer but had the bad luck to have her career overlapping with the Dutch pioneer of the sport Marie Baron. Despite this, Van Gelder still had success in competitive swimming, winning national titles and setting a Dutch breaststroke record. In 1928 she was selected to swim in the 200 metres breaststroke at the Amsterdam Olympics but did not advance from the heats. She had her best results the following year when she became the Dutch champion in the 100, 200, and 400 metres breaststroke. She also equalled Baron’s world record in the 200 metres breaststroke and set a national record in the 500 metres breaststroke. Van Gelder continued to compete throughout her life, participating in water polo and swimming events as a veteran.
