Biography

One of the top swimmers in the - then new - butterfly stroke, Atie Voorbij was considered a medal contender for Melbourne 1956. She had gradually lowered the - unofficial - world record in the 100 m butterfly from 1:13.7 in July 1955 to 1:11.9 in February 1956. When Shelley Mann bettered the record in July 1956, a Voorbij-Mann clash at the Melbourne Olympics seemed likely. However, when the Dutch NOC decided to boycott these Olympic Games over the Soviet response to the Hungarian revolt, Voorbij was forced to remain at home.

At a consolation competition in Hilversum, she did again lower the world record, this time to 1:10.5. She repeated that time at the 1957 Dutch championships, which would become the first officially recognized world record in the distance. By 1958, Voorbij had been surpassed as the best Dutch butterfly swimmer, and Tineke Lagerberg won the 1958 European title in Budapest. With the Dutch medley relay squad, she did earn a gold medal. In that event, Voorbij also recorded three world records. Voorbij did continue to swim until the Rome Olympics, where she reached the final and placed 5th.
