Biography

Arsad Alpad, a Filipino Muslim, was the third best breaststroker from the Philippines in the 1930s, together with Teófilo Yldefonso and Jikirum Adjaluddin, who reached the semi-finals in the 200 m at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He also competed in this event at the 1930 and 1934 Far Eastern Games with his best result in 1930, placing fourth. As an army captain, he surrendered to the Japanese in the Pacific War near Zamboanga on the island of Mindanao. After almost one year of imprisonment, he returned to Jolo island and served as an interpreter for the local Sultan of Sulu and the Japanese occupying forces. After a group of Japanese vanished, Alpad fled to the small village of Bonbon on Jolo’s north coast.
