Nils Christiansen was the son of American missionaries of Spanish-Scandinavian descent in the Philippines. He returned to the United States to attend the School of Mines in the 1930s and eventually settle in Golden, Colorado. As a potential member of the US team for the 1940 Olympics, he was involved in re-opening the local indoor pool where he gave swimming lessons. Later, he worked in Oak Creek, Tennessee, at the production site for the Manhattan Project. In the 1970s, back in Golden, he Christiansen made it to the news by reviving the ancient technique of building houses using adobes.
