Biography

Joe Obial took part in two swimming events at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but failed to qualify for the second round in either of them. He remained active in swimming and later became a commissioner for the Philippines Amateur Swimming Association. His daughter Imelda, “Baby”, was a member of the national swimming team as well. Obial’s grandson Joey Obial San Andres, although he also started as swimmer, took up badminton playing at World Championships, and was later elected vice president of the Philippine Badminton Association.
