As one of the best swimmers of his day Leszek Górski won more than a dozen Polish championships and set 32 national records. Górski won his first Polish titles in 1977, winning the 200 metres backstroke and the 200 metres individual medley events. He would specialise in the latter, winning the 200 metres title five more times (1978–80, 1984, 1986), along with six titles in the 400 metres (1979–81, 1983–84, 1986). In 1979 Górski underwent major surgery on a knee ligament, but still managed to train and qualify for the 1980 Moskva Olympics. At the Games he finished seventh in the final of the 400 metres individual medley. Two years later he won silver in the same event at the European Championships in Split. After undergoing further surgery, and suffering the bad luck of breaking his arm, he called time on his swimming career in 1988. Following his retirement Górski continued to be involved in the sport as a swimming coach.
