In addition to competing at the 1932 Olympics, Jenny Maakal won a silver medal in the 1934 British Empire Games 4x110 yards freestyle relay. She placed fifth at the 1930 British Empire Games in the 440 yard freestyle. Maakal’s mother had to take out a loan on their home to finance her daughter’s journey to Los Angeles. As there was a risk they would lose their house, her teammates on the boxing team held a successful charity event at which they raised enough money to pay the debt.
