Augusto Rangone was one of the founder members of the U. S. Alessandria football club in 1912. He served the club in various official capacities, including treasurer, technical director and, for the 1925/26 season, was club coach. He was also a referee from 1913-24, a member of the technical committee for the national team, and coach at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, when Italy won a bronze medal.
Rangone enjoyed 12 wins and seven draws in his 24 matches in charge of the national squad. In the International Cup between 1927-30, he served as coach alongside the legendary Vittorio Pozzo. Rangone was also a journalist, and in the 1930s edited a bi-weekly periodical of Alessandria history and local culture, entitled L’informatore.
