Originally from Burnie, Tasmania, Craig Keegan initially played Aussie rules football until he suffered an injury at the age of 13. Keegan then shifted his focus towards hockey, playing for the Tasmanian team. Despite being a talented player he never made it into the national squad and moved to the UK in his mid-20s where he settled in Derbyshire.
Keegan played for Bedford and Beeston in England before undertaking a teacher training course at Long Eaton’s Trent College. In 2008 he was appointed as the head coach at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough before becoming the assistant women’s coach for the GB and England teams in 2013. Keegan was the head coach of the Great Britain women’s hockey team at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, where Team GB won the gold medal. After the Olympics Keegan briefly returned to Australia but came back to England where he worked as the deputy director of sport at Derby University.
